About this video

Layoff lists have become a crowded hunting ground, with hundreds of recruiters hitting the same spreadsheet the moment it appears. The real opportunity often sits in the lists that companies locked down, took offline, or that have simply aged out of everyone else's attention.

A set of practical techniques covers how to capture that data before it vanishes and how to mine what's already been forgotten:

  • Pairing Google Sheets' IMPORTRANGE and QUERY functions to pull data from a public spreadsheet into a private one, even when the original owner has disabled copying.
  • Using that same formula trick to expose columns that have been hidden on a shared sheet, revealing email addresses and phone numbers that weren't meant to be seen.
  • Setting up a free automation recipe that watches a source spreadsheet and copies every new row into a personal sheet, so a running list stays current even if the original gets taken down or vandalized.
  • Searching an OSINT-style directory built from public bookmarking pages to find tool recommendations for contact enrichment, email verification, and Google X-ray searches.
  • Digging into two-year-old layoff spreadsheets that most recruiters have forgotten about, on the logic that candidates named there haven't been contacted by anyone else recently and can be reached with an "alumni" angle in the subject line that gets noticed precisely because it's unusual.
  • Using a Chrome extension built for extracting Airtable bases as CSV files in seconds, sidestepping the usual workarounds like printing to PDF, for boards that hold tens of thousands of names.
  • Bulk-opening dozens of scraped links at once with a browser extension, then sorting quickly through which lists are stale and which are still full of usable contact details.

The larger point is about timing and attention: everyone rushes to the newest layoff sheet, but the old ones, sitting untouched and full of unenriched, self-supplied contact information, are where a recruiter can reach people nobody else is currently messaging.
