Finding Talent in New and Hidden Places

About this video
LinkedIn is not the whole talent market. A meaningful share of the working-age population has no active profile there, and response rates to cold outreach on the platform have fallen low enough that even generous replies rarely translate into real interest. That gap is the starting point for a set of practical sourcing tactics built around finding candidates on platforms recruiters tend to overlook.
The core idea is to treat a username as a breadcrumb rather than a dead end. Many people reuse the same handle across GitHub, Slack, Discord, Twitter, and other sites, and a handful of free tools will take one username and surface every place it turns up. Combined with reverse people-search and reverse image-search tools, this makes it possible to build out a fuller picture of a candidate from nothing more than a partial name or a profile photo pulled from LinkedIn.
Specific approaches covered include:
- Pulling a username straight out of a LinkedIn profile URL and running it through free "check this username everywhere" tools to find matching accounts on other platforms
- Using GitHub search to locate technical candidates and confirm identity through public repositories and contribution activity
- Running a saved profile photo through reverse image search to find every other site where the same picture appears
- Mapping shared followers and connections on Twitter to spot common ground for personalized outreach
- Checking whether a candidate mostly logs in from mobile or web to decide whether outreach should be short and scannable or longer and detailed
- Looking at follower geography to identify where a passive candidate's network is concentrated, useful when hiring for a specific location
Underlying all of it is a simple observation: platforms like GitHub, GitLab, Slack, and Discord collectively hold tens of millions of active users, many of whom never show up in a standard LinkedIn search. Treating those communities as legitimate sourcing channels, and using the same lightweight investigative habits sourcers already apply on LinkedIn, opens up candidate pools that stay untouched by recruiters fishing in the same overcrowded pond.
