About this video
Some roles resist every normal search. The requirement list describes three people stitched into one, the talent pool is a few hundred names worldwide, or the usual channels have already been scraped dry. A panel of sourcing specialists and a hiring manager work through what actually happens once a search reaches that point.
- Breaking down an impossible requisition starts with a proper intake conversation, treating the sourcing kickoff as separate from a recruiter's intake, and pushing hiring managers to explain where candidates read news, build communities, and spend their time.
- When a hiring manager insists only a handful of companies could produce the right candidate, the fix is reframing what actually makes those companies relevant, such as scale of data or logistics complexity, and widening the target list to adjacent industries that share those traits.
- Sourcing strategy for a niche role means mapping alternative job titles and keywords, sizing the market with a broad search, narrowing to an ideal but tiny candidate set, then deliberately stripping keywords back out once that pool is exhausted.
- "Donor companies" are identified by matching culture, growth stage, and team structure rather than just industry, since a person doing ten narrow jobs at a large corporation isn't the same as the generalist a scaling startup needs.
- Community sourcing works best as contribution first, recruiting second: joining Slack and Discord groups tied to a profession, asking admins for permission before posting, and building visibility by sharing company content rather than jobs.
- Local platforms matter outside the usual tools, including Telegram groups with strict transparency rules for recruiting posts, regional CV databases, and repeated low-pressure outreach that turns into replies only after real networking, such as co-hosted meetups, has happened.
- Sourcing in China after LinkedIn's exit relies on WeChat, including a workaround using the public contact-info panel on LinkedIn profiles that still surfaces WeChat handles, since an all-purpose app used for payments and messaging has effectively replaced other channels there.
Throughout, the consistent advice is to treat sourcing as relationship-building in the candidate's own space rather than a scraping exercise, and to quantify a market with real numbers before declaring a role impossible to fill.
