About this video

A career told in stories rather than slides traces the path from cold-calling agency recruiter to dedicated sourcing specialist, with the lessons that stuck along the way.

The early agency years covered skilled-labor recruiting, quota pressure, and the parts of the job that never fit: selling recruiting services to companies felt like a true cold call, while reaching candidates felt warm and natural. That distinction pushed a shift toward running an independent recruiting practice, then into technical recruiting almost by accident when a friend needed four .NET developers filled.

A first conference appearance introduced Boolean image search and the realization that sourcing was far more cerebral than expected. That discovery reshaped how search strategy gets built, and it anchors several practical points:

  • Sourcing rewards critical thinking the same way software engineering does, using a search "language" instead of code, where one misplaced character can break an entire string.
  • Clean Boolean syntax matters: no need for quotation marks around single words, and precision on multi-word phrases can make or break a search.
  • Curiosity, framed through a habit of constantly asking "why did this work" or "why did this fail," is treated as the real engine of getting better at the craft.
  • Sourcers are not entry-level recruiters. The two roles are equal in skill and pay ceiling, just specialized differently, and a strong partnership between a sourcer and a recruiter under a dedicated sourcing function outperforms either working alone.
  • Experimentation and a willingness to fail are treated as normal parts of the sourcing process, not risks to avoid.

Mentorship threads through the whole arc: a chance lunch at a first conference led to a lasting friendship and an introduction to search techniques that reshaped how candidates get found. A later lunch with a well-known figure in the sourcing world led to a certification course that, paired with the skills already built, helped double a salary within months.

The larger point sits underneath all of it: sourcing is not a stepping stone to recruiting, it is its own discipline, one that rewards curiosity, precision, and a willingness to keep experimenting long after the basics are learned.
