About this video

Building a personal brand as a sourcer or recruiter changes how candidates respond before a first message is ever sent. Once outreach and hiring moved fully remote, an online profile became the only credibility check candidates had, and a thin or invisible presence made every cold message harder to land.

The approach centers on treating a personal brand as a deliberate, planned project rather than a byproduct of being active online. Key practices include:

  • Defining a personal mission, vision and values before posting anything, so content has a clear point instead of just filling a feed
  • Identifying a specific expertise within recruiting or sourcing rather than trying to speak to everything
  • Shifting target audience thinking from a local market to a global one when sourcing internationally
  • Producing original content instead of resharing other people's posts, since self-made insights build more trust and get more engagement
  • Being intentional rather than chasing volume, aiming content at a small number of people who actually take something from it instead of a large number who scroll past
  • Keeping content mobile-friendly, since almost all viewing happens on a phone
  • Working from a weekly or monthly content plan rather than posting reactively
  • Staying active on a small, deliberate set of platforms rather than spreading thin across every network
  • Responding to unsolicited messages and connection requests, since networking opportunities often arrive unannounced
  • Googling your own name periodically to see what a candidate would find first, and treating that result as a credibility check

LinkedIn functions as the anchor platform because of its ranking in search results and its mix of content formats. Instagram or other social platforms serve to show a fuller, more personal side of a professional identity. TikTok stands out for its algorithm, which can put a video in front of thousands of viewers regardless of follower count, making it useful for short, informal career or recruiting advice that can then be repurposed across other channels.

Results from this approach included candidates reaching out first in markets with no prior local presence, placements made directly through inbound interest, and recognition from peers in the industry. The underlying argument is that a credible, visible, authentically personal profile does more to earn candidate trust than any single outreach message can.
