About this video
A personal brand is not a slogan or a headshot. It is the perception and emotion someone else carries after having a relationship with you, built entirely from what they observe in your actions, both online and off. That distinction reframes personal branding away from self-promotion and toward consistency of behavior across every channel a candidate or colleague might encounter.
Brands, whether corporate or personal, share three qualities: they are distinctive, they are relevant to what the audience already cares about, and they are consistent enough that people come to believe in the behavior over time. Recruiters and talent professionals now operate as both creators and sellers of experience, representing an organization while also building their own reputation in parallel, whether they intend to or not.
Communication itself has changed shape. A single conversation with a candidate now moves across LinkedIn, Instagram, email, and text within the same exchange, and people gravitate toward whichever channel feels most comfortable to them rather than staying in one place. That means a strong presence on a single platform is no longer enough; the expectation is visibility everywhere a candidate might look. Every rushed reply, every abbreviation, every tone choice becomes part of how someone judges the relationship, often based on nothing more than the last message sent.
Public examples make the stakes concrete: a spokesperson choice, a plagiarism scandal, a personal decision made in public office, each shows how quickly a strong brand can collapse when consistency breaks down. On the other side, genuine confidence and comfort in one's own identity, unapologetically stated, builds the kind of loyalty that outlasts any single controversy.
Practical questions worth sitting with:
- What makes your expertise distinctive within your organization or industry
- What message are you sending consistently, on purpose, across every platform you use
- How does your last communication, not your best one, reflect on your brand
- What imperfections or personal history actually make your professional story more credible
The underlying argument is that personal brand was never optional for anyone in recruiting. It has simply become visible, tracked, and judged in ways it never was before.
