About this video

Recruiting has become obsessed with metrics: pass-through rates, funnel numbers, activity dashboards. Data matters, but it doesn't tell a recruiter what to say to the person on the other end of the phone. The pre-close conversation, the part where a recruiter actually finds out what a candidate cares about, has largely disappeared from practice, and it may matter more than compensation, more than perks, more than any number on a spreadsheet.

A live exercise makes the point directly: two strangers are asked to sell each other on job descriptions, then given ninety seconds to ask each other personal questions unrelated to the job, such as what they'd bring to a desert island or where they'd want to travel. After just a few minutes of listening rather than pitching, most people say they'd sell the roles differently, because they finally know what the other person actually wants.

A real closing story illustrates the same idea. A candidate ready to sign an offer instead surfaced a competing six-figure sign-on bonus at the last minute. Rather than trying to match the number, the counter offer stayed small, but it was built around something the candidate had mentioned early on: a home renovation project he and his partner were saving for. He signed immediately, not because the money matched, but because the offer showed he'd been heard.

Key ideas covered include:

  • Why spending time upfront to understand a candidate's real motivations reduces wasted effort later, even when it means walking away from a conversation
  • How treating recruiting as a transactional sales function, rather than a relationship, damages trust and long-term pipeline
  • Why data should support the story a recruiter tells about a candidate, not replace it
  • How closing well, not just sourcing volume, should be recognized as a measurable skill, even though most organizations never ask recruiters how they closed a candidate
  • Why candidates who are told no, honestly, often return later as warmer prospects

The larger point is that recruiting and candidate journeys overlap more than they diverge, and the fastest way to become a stronger closer is to spend a few minutes finding out why a candidate is even having the conversation in the first place.
