About this video
Candidate response rates have collapsed, hiring managers have no patience for pipelining, and no-shows on start dates have become routine. Against that backdrop, a set of concrete sourcing tactics is laid out that still works and is likely to keep working for years to come.
The core framework borrows from marketing's paid, earned, and owned media model. Paid media gets a close look through native advertising: job content that blends into its environment rather than interrupting it, such as embedding an opening inside an article about the profession rather than posting a standalone job ad. Traditional paid tactics like pay-per-click, SEO, display, paid social, and paid influencer content are compared, along with an experiment showing that something as small as job title phrasing can triple click-through rates.
Earned media covers social advocacy, employer review sites, guest posts, and mentions, while owned media covers career sites, blogs, and company branding pages, including the often-ignored discipline of keeping a standardized LinkedIn banner.
Referrals get a detailed treatment through a mandatory onboarding process that scans new hires' social profiles for prior colleagues, generates a shortlist per employer, and asks new hires to flag who they'd work with again. Results from running this program include high participation rates, strong apply and interview conversion among contacted referrals, and a human-approval step at every stage so no one is contacted without explicit permission.
Other tactics include:
- Retargeting silver medalists, declined offers, and no-shows, plus boomerang campaigns reaching people who left in good standing
- Mining transcribed interview calls for keywords candidates mentioned but never put on their profile
- Using LinkedIn's connections-of and followers-of filters to source a competitor or peer's network
- Building shareable libraries of plug-and-play search strings and a comprehensive, segmented list of target companies
- Creating no-code bookmarklets to automate repetitive search steps
- Running a tiered intake system that splits requests into full source-and-screen, research-only, and data-append work depending on recruiter capacity
Each tactic is presented as a long-term investment rather than a quick fix, with the suggestion to pick one, master it, and move to the next.
