Sourcing has changed since the days of plain Google searches for Java engineers, but the old tricks still work alongside the new ones. A side-by-side look at Boolean strings and AI chat tools shows what each does well, and where the human brain still beats the machine.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are compared directly on the same sourcing questions, from finding certified ethical hacker resumes in a specific state to identifying the best cybersecurity conferences for building a speaker and attendee list. Complex Boolean strings using contact-info tricks, listservs and niche job boards are laid out alongside what happens when the same question is simply typed into a chatbot as a natural-language prompt.
Practical techniques covered include:
- Building X-ray and Boolean strings that pull resumes with direct contact information, and why AI still can't fully replicate that kind of targeted search
- Using listservs and old-school directory sites, which often surface current, accurate contact details that job boards miss

The larger point is that AI and traditional sourcing are not competing methods but complementary ones. Chatbots are fast at generating a base list of resources, associations and search directions, while Boolean and X-ray strings still dig deeper for direct, current contact information. Combining both cuts research time significantly, freeing up more hours for the part of the job that actually moves candidates forward: picking up the phone and talking to people.
