About this video

A personal career story runs through the usual traps sourcers hit: entry-level treatment with no defined progression, a management track that looks like the only way up, and the quiet burnout that follows when the part of the job someone loves gets buried under admin work.

The path traced here starts in high-volume agency recruiting, filling one-day gigs like brand ambassadors and promo models by searching Instagram for aspiring influencers rather than relying on LinkedIn. It moves through full-cycle healthcare recruiting, where a growing admin load pushed sourcing out entirely, and a promised promotion kept getting delayed. Self-funding a first sourcing conference, writing a batch of early blog posts to earn a free ticket, and taking a lateral move to a company willing to invest in a dedicated sourcing function all mark turning points that led to an eventual management role at an aerospace company.

Management brought real lessons: back-to-back meetings that cut into actual sourcing time, difficult conversations about performance and personal circumstances, and the discovery that what was actually wanted out of the role was mentorship, not performance management. One story involves coaching a new parent through a rough patch during a period of remote work and no childcare, rebuilding her confidence to the point where she went on to speak at multiple industry conferences. Eventually the pull back to individual contributor work won out, driven by a preference for hands-on sourcing over strategy and reporting.

A survey of sourcers who took management roles found a substantial share moved back to individual contributor or specialized paths, and LinkedIn data shows how rare senior titles like lead or principal sourcer still are relative to the number of recruiters.

The argument built from this is for real non-management tracks in sourcing, modeled loosely on how engineering teams split technical and management paths. Options laid out include:

  • Talent intelligence work, combining open-source and human intelligence to inform hiring decisions
  • Recruiting technology specialization, becoming the subject-matter expert on CRM and sourcing tools
  • Analytics roles focused on sourcing data
  • Learning and development, teaching sourcing skills to others
  • A team-lead or principal-level role that bridges the gap between management and individual contribution

The case made throughout is that sourcing shouldn't default to being a stepping stone toward recruiting or management, and that building real advancement paths keeps skilled sourcers engaged rather than pushing them toward roles that don't fit.
