Cold Calling Is Not Dead — But It Is On Life Support: Leveraging B2C Strategy For Omnichannel Recruitment

About this video

Healthcare recruiting has moved past the era when phones and Rolodexes defined a recruiter's toolbox. Candidate behavior now mirrors consumer behavior: people want quick, informative interactions and are far more likely to open a text message than answer a call from an unknown number. That shift changes what an effective outreach strategy looks like, especially in high-volume healthcare hiring where physicians and advanced practice providers are in short supply.

Cold calling hasn't disappeared, but it works best as a narrow, deliberate final step rather than a broad first move. A more effective sequence starts with data: building a database through purchased lists, conference attendee lists, sourcing teams or data enrichment vendors, then running campaigns through a CRM or applicant tracking system to see who opens messages, who engages more than once, and who belongs on a refined shortlist worth calling directly.

Omnichannel recruiting builds brand awareness by combining multiple channels so a candidate encounters consistent information wherever they spend time online or offline. Elements worth combining include:

  • Text messaging and mobile-optimized job postings
  • Social platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok
  • Personalized email and email blasts, alongside traditional mailers
  • Referral programs, newsletters and employee word of mouth
  • Job fairs, campus recruitment and local networking
  • Geo-fencing, aggregators and traditional job postings
  • QR codes, digital lunch-and-learns, and online forums where candidates can ask about jobs or resumes with no pressure to apply

Consumer marketing principles apply directly: appeals grounded in credibility, emotion and logic build the kind of trust that turns a job seeker into a candidate. Recognizable customer-experience brands offer useful models for tone and consistency in employer messaging. A cadence of outreach tied to real moments, such as congratulating graduating residents by name in a subject line, keeps a company relevant to a candidate at the right point in their career.

A practical toolkit for this approach includes a CRM or applicant tracking system capable of SMS messaging and analytics tracking, a solid base of contact data to start from, a vendor relationship for text and data enrichment where the CRM falls short, internal referral and newsletter programs, and AI-driven or chat-based tools that support a more responsive candidate experience.
