About this video

A recruiter license makes sourcing easier, but it's far from the only way to find candidates. A set of free and low-cost tools can widen a search well beyond what LinkedIn alone returns, and several of them take only minutes to learn.

  • Boolean builders generate search strings by letting you fill in fields rather than memorize operators. Different builders and browsers return different pools of profiles for the same search, so running a query through more than one tool is worth the extra few minutes.
  • Search string builders save reusable Boolean strings for roles that get filled repeatedly, such as mobile developers or financial analysts. Swap out a city or keyword instead of rebuilding the whole string each time, and keep a library of pre-built diversity searches that pull from lists of professional and collegiate organizations.
  • Google Image Search turns a normal keyword string into a way to surface candidate photos by adding a term like female site:linkedin.com before switching to the images tab, then returning to web results to get a list of names skewed toward the audience a hiring manager is asking for.
  • Custom and programmable search engines x-ray LinkedIn and the open web for specific outcomes: technical candidates on GitHub or Stack Overflow, profiles with personal email addresses already listed, resumes and portfolios outside LinkedIn, or people from particular schools, companies, or backgrounds. Adding minus operators filters out unwanted results, such as recruiters showing up in a search meant for salespeople.
  • Chrome extensions surface contact details, connection dates, and social links directly on a LinkedIn profile, giving an easy opening line for outreach.
  • Email-finding tools generate a list of likely address permutations from a name and company domain, useful for reaching people who aren't connected on LinkedIn or don't have a recruiter license to message them directly.

None of these tools is a silver bullet on its own. The value comes from testing several against the same search, keeping the ones that consistently deliver, and building a personal toolbox that doesn't require starting from scratch every time a new role comes in.
